Rapid Access Cancer Test Campaign
An informative video and print campaign to reassure and educate patients following their rapid access cancer screening test. Using 3D character animation and colourful illustrations.

The Brief
One in ten patients (10%) are diagnosed with bowel cancer through national bowel cancer screening programmes in England and Wales. But for the 90% of patient who are screened and do not have a cancer diagnosis, this provides both a moment of relief as the patient receives this result and also a window into what is know as a ‘teachable moment’. This is where the patient is more receptive and open to information about how they can reduce future risks of cancer and are willing to take onboard healthcare information that will benefit them and their family.
With this strategic timing in mind, the NHS Lincolnshire Integrated Care Board approached us to create a leaflet and animation that is aimed at patients who are NOT diagnosed with cancer following their rapid access bowel cancer diagnostic test. So along with their letter telling them their results they would also encourage patients to read the leaflet and watch the informative animation.

Our Solution
Working alongside the NHS Lincolnshire ICB we created a survey amongst patients that have recently had a rapid access screening. We asked them what information they wish they'd known and any further questions they had about cancer risks. We then also created a patient co-production group in order to get input from patients on the creative approaches we could take, the animation script and leaflet we were creating.
We then created style frames, storyboards and further scripts and worked with the patient co-production group to guide what patients found most engaging and impactful with regard to cancer awareness and the rapid access screening they had just been through.
The patient group provided very practical solutions and guided us towards a more engaging 3D character based visual style. They saw this as more engaging, entertaining and visually interesting which was important for them to continue to watch the animation. This 3D character style was then rolled out across the leaflet we produced as well.
The animation and leaflet has been extremely well received amongst clinicians and other patient stakeholder groups. The campaign is now being rolled out across Lincolnshire with a view to adapting it for other regional NHS trusts.

Clients View
Working with Turbine Creative has been a real pleasure. Their understanding of combining what our patient's (and clinicians) need from NHS Trust communication materials has been incredibly helpful. They navigated the research, patient co-production, surveys and subsequent creative production brilliantly. Everyone on the team, including patient stakeholders absolutely love what Turbine Creative have produced for us in this campaign. We are very excited to get this content out there!
