Chronic Fatigue Education Videos
A well-researched and informative 11 x video campaign on the subject of Chronic Fatigue in young people. Included stories from young people, insights from clinical experts and presenter-led educational content.

The Brief
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also sometimes called Myalgic Encephalitis (ME) is a relatively common condition in children and young people, affecting approximately 1% of teenagers (around 50,000 people). The CFS clinical team at Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundations Trust saw that there was a huge need for educational video resources that would connect with young people to educate, encourage and deliver insights in a way that suits them.
They wanted video content that included personal stories from young people, tackled the subject matter they were interested in, and delivered it in a way that combined talking heads, young people's lived experiences and some visual animated elements. They wanted these videos to be part of their consultation process so patients were able to receive commonly required healthcare information in a way that was visually interesting and not just a written booklet or spoken about with a clinician. After all, young people truly are a smartphone and social media generation that want their content through video.

Our Solution
Working alongside the Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundations Trust we recommended an initial phase of research aimed at this young target audience. This phase included surveys, workshops and digital questionnaires. We posted out the initial request to complete our survey in a shiny purple envelope which maximised the open and complete rate on this survey massively. We gained an impressive 72% completion rate on those invited to the survey in this way. We also conducted workshops with young people affected by CFS and gained many great insights from their personal experiences of living with this condition.
This research phase was invaluable as it showed us many key pieces of information that shaped the content we created and made sure it had maximum impact. These were things like:
– Young people wanted to hear from other young people with this condition that are older and have been able to find coping methods. They wanted to hear their personal stories.
– Young people had clear ideas on the subjects and themes about CFS they wanted more information on, and this didn't 100% tie in with clinicians pre-conceived ideas
– They wanted to hear from clinicians around certain key topics such as the mind-body connection and the challenges of sleep
– They also wanted to see some animated elements in the videos so the information could be presented is another visual style that was clearer to understand.
The production of these 11 videos took place in 3 different stages: Young people's stories were filmed at their homes, with them doing hobbies or activities that reflected a bit about who they are (not just focussed on their illness). We then filmed the clinicians at their treatment centre talking about key topic. Finally we filmed our brilliant presenter, Poppy, delivering the core narrative and main content of the videos that we wrote in collaboration with the clinicians. This content was then edited together and animated section added in wherever it was required.

The videos have recently been released and have been incredibly well received with multiple testimonials already coming in from staff and young people alike:
“ The educational video campaign Turbine Creative produced has been incredibly well-received from both young people and clinicians! The creative delivery of this educational content helps deliver really important, life changing information - without it feeling too heavy or academic. The interviews with the young people also helped tell very powerful personal stories that will inspire and encourage other patients going through a similar experience"
