Lichen Sclerosus Guide
An award-winning national educational initiative including videos and digital content for both clinicians and patients bringing deeper understanding of this condition.

The Brief
Lichen sclerosus is a skin condition that causes itchy white patches on the genitals or other parts of the body. There's no cure, but treatment can help relieve the symptoms. Lichen sclerosus affects people of all ages, including children. But it's much more common in women over 50.
There isn’t a great deal of understanding about this condition or information that patients can use to find out more, and so we were approached by the Centre of Evidence Based Dermatology (in partnership with Bristol University) to create a campaign to help bring accessible, educational resources to patients and practitioners.
The campaign required us to create multiple assets including visual branding, animations, website and social media content as well as printed items.

Our Solution
Working with an expert team of clinicians, researchers, consultants and patient advisory groups we set about creating content for this campaign. This included visual branding, illustrations, printed materials, social media content, a website and animations that could explain intimate and personal information in an engaging and educational manner.
We created a series of 7 educational videos on subjects such as 'What is LS', 'Anatomy of the Vulva' and 'Self-Examination' and 'Applying cream'. The content provided a challenge to us in terms of how to represent anatomical illustrations in a way that was informative without being too explicit for inappropriate digital censoring. We worked in collaboration with patient stakeholders, clinical consultants and academic researchers to make sure our illustrative style was educational and informative without feeling either too simplified or too explicit.
The final content has been incredibly well-received with over 30,000 hits to the website within a few weeks, and 10,000's of views of the animated content.
You can view the website and content here: https://www.lichensclerosusguide.org.uk

This project has also gone on to win an award for 'Communicating Effectively with Patients and Families' in the 2025 Picker Experience Network Awards.
The development of this information resource was supported by the following charities: Wellbeing of Women; British Society for the Study of Vulval Disease; British Association of Dermatologists.

Clients View
In 3 months the website has had nearly 13,000 users on and many more page views. The first promotional reel on Instagram was seen by 30,000 people…you're speaking to them in a way that shows you actually understand the everyday challenges of LS… I've been amazed with what we've done!
