Paris Perceptions Map
Creation of a visual aid to support Paralympians in negotiating the emotional pressures of competing in the Paris summer Paralympics 2024

The Brief
As the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) for Great Britain, it is ParalympicsGB’s responsibility to select, prepare, enter, fund and manage the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team at the Paralympic Games. Within this remit is the support of positive athlete mental health.
Amongst many other methods to facilitate this, the team at ParalympicsGB asked us to create an illustrated map that renamed famous Paris landmarks with emotional prompts to help athletes identify how they were currently feeling.
One of the first steps in managing positive mental health in high pressure situations is for athletes to identify how they are feeling and this map would give them a clear visual aid to help with this.

Our Solution
Having already created a Paralympics Athlete Journal to support mindfulness and mental health we had an initial illustrative style to explore. So we began the project by reviewing different approaches within this style using water colour, line art and sketched styles. After creating various moodboards we got feedback from the stakeholder team including sport management and paralympians themselves. We then began drawing the map and creating artwork for various sizes.
The final approved map was then included in the athlete journals and printed out as a large scale poster. It was also positioned in the ParalympicsGB athlete village in Paris where it was successfully used in athlete support sessions by the athlete psychology and well-being teams.
Paris 2024 was another incredibly successful Games for the ParalympicsGB team. They won medals across 18 of the 19 sports the team competed in – the highest of any nation ever, with more than half of the 215 athletes in the team also reaching the podium. We were really proud to have contributed our small part in supporting this incredible team.

Turbine Creative understood the brief, how we wanted this to be specific to not only Paris but also ParalympicsGB and brought lots of suggestions to discussions so we could really work through what we wanted and how it would look. The map was well received by athletes, staff and visitors and it was aesthetically good to look at. We placed some magnets onto the map which was adhered to a magnetic board and people would move the magnets around based on their current state. There was a clear shift from anxious, hopeful and anticipatory feelings at the start of the Games, to more tired, relieved and grateful toward the end!
